For one day in Hampton, pair a museum in the city with time downtown and an afternoon at Fort Monroe National Monument. The route combines local history or aviation with a landmark whose public grounds and beaches have their own opening patterns.

  • Start: Choose the Hampton History Museum or Virginia Air & Space Science Center.
  • Downtown: The Hampton Visitor Center shares an address with the Hampton History Museum.
  • Afternoon: Fort Monroe’s grounds are open daily, while its visitor center follows a separate schedule.
  • Getting around: From a room at this Hampton motel, Hampton city centre is about five minutes by car.
Start with a Hampton museum

Start with a Hampton museum

Choose the Hampton History Museum for a chronological introduction to the city, or the Virginia Air & Space Science Center for aviation and space exhibits. The History Museum is at 120 Old Hampton Lane, and the Air & Space Science Center is at 600 Settlers Landing Road.

The Hampton History Museum’s ten permanent galleries trace local history from the Kecoughtan tribe and Virginia Colony through the Civil War and Space Age.

Admission is $5 for adults; $4 for seniors, active military, active NASA, AAA members and children ages 4–12; children under 4 enter free. Free visitor parking is available at Settlers Landing Parking Garage, accessed from History Museum Way.

The Virginia Air & Space Science Center features more than 30 historic aircraft, aviation exhibits spanning 100 years of flight, a hands-on space exploration gallery, the Apollo 12 Command Module and the Orion PA-1 Test Vehicle.

Admission is $23.50 for adults ages 19–64, $21.50 for seniors 65 and older, $20.50 for active-duty military and NASA visitors, $20 for children ages 3–18, and free for children ages 0–2.

For help choosing between them, museums in Hampton is a useful way to compare the options. If you pick the history museum, it shares its address with the Hampton Visitor Center, where you can collect area maps and attraction brochures.

Add a downtown Hampton stop

Add a downtown Hampton stop

Downtown Hampton fits naturally between a museum visit and the drive to Fort Monroe. Hampton city centre is about five minutes by car from Buckroe Motel. For a wider look at the central area, Hampton City Centre: Getting Around and What to Plan provides more context for a downtown stop.

The Hampton Transit Center is at 2 W. Pembroke Avenue near downtown.

If you want to focus on the city’s past, the Hampton History Museum visitor guide covers what to know before a visit.

Plan an afternoon at Fort Monroe

Plan an afternoon at Fort Monroe

Fort Monroe works well as an afternoon stop because its park grounds remain open beyond the visitor center’s hours. From I-64, the visitor directions use Exit 268, then S Mallory Street and E Mellen Street; continue about 0.6 miles on E Mellen Street before crossing a small bridge into Fort Monroe.

The grounds are open every day from 5:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Public beaches are open year-round from sunrise to sunset. The Fort Monroe Visitor & Education Center, at 30 Ingalls Road, normally opens Sunday and Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., and closes Monday. Its off-season schedule runs Sunday and Wednesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with Monday and Tuesday closed.

As you walk around, remember that many buildings are occupied residences: do not peer into windows or open gates. The maximum speed limit within Fort Monroe is 25 mph. For a more focused visit, Fort Monroe National Monument has a visitor guide from Hampton.

Choose a flexible evening stop

Choose a flexible evening stop

Keep the final stop flexible around the time you leave Fort Monroe. Its grounds stay open until 11:59 p.m., but the beaches close at sunset, so save beach time for earlier in the afternoon if that is part of your plan.

If you would rather spend longer at a museum, compare its closing time with the visitor center schedule before setting your order for the day. That makes it easier to choose between an extended indoor visit and more time outdoors.

Check travel time and opening schedules

Opening schedules vary by attraction, so check the official site before you go. The Hampton History Museum is open Monday–Saturday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and Sunday, 1:00–5:00 p.m. The Virginia Air & Space Science Center is closed Monday and Tuesday, open Wednesday–Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and Sunday, noon–5:00 p.m.

Hampton Roads Transit lists Route 109 between Hampton Transit Center and Buckroe Beach, and Route 115 between Hampton Transit Center, Fox Hill, Buckroe Beach and VA Medical Center. Check Hampton Roads Transit for current service details before relying on a route.

Adapt the route to your interests

For a history-led day, begin at the Hampton History Museum, make a downtown stop, then spend the afternoon at Fort Monroe. For an aviation-focused visit, choose the Virginia Air & Space Science Center first and leave time for the fort grounds afterward.

If you want both museums, check their separate schedules and admission prices before planning the day. A shorter museum visit can leave more time for downtown and Fort Monroe; a longer visit means choosing which stop matters most to your itinerary.
